Global variables

Use global variables to store and reuse credentials and values across all of your flows. Global variables are typically used for API keys and service credentials — for example, your OpenAI API key or a database connection string.

Orbis Studio encrypts all global variable values in the database. You can use a global variable in any component field that displays the globe icon.

Create a global variable

  1. In the Orbis Studio header, click your profile icon and select Settings.
  2. Click Global Variables, then click Add New.
  3. Enter a Variable Name and Value.
  4. Optional: Select a Type:
    • Generic — value is visible in the visual editor
    • Credential — value is masked in the visual editor (recommended for API keys)
  5. Optional: Use Apply To Fields to automatically apply this variable to matching fields across all components. For example, selecting OpenAI API Key will pre-fill that field in any OpenAI component.
  6. Click Save Variable.

The variable is now available in any component field that displays the globe icon.

Edit a global variable

  1. Go to Settings → Global Variables.
  2. Click the variable you want to edit.
  3. Update the Variable Name, Value, or Apply To Fields as needed.
  4. Click Update Variable.

Delete a global variable

warning

Deleting a global variable is permanent. Flows that reference the deleted variable will fail until updated.

  1. Go to Settings → Global Variables.
  2. Check the variable you want to delete.
  3. Click Delete.
